The first villages on the River Thames

Ewen is the first village the infant river Thames flows through. Its name comes from a Saxon word meaning 'source of a river'.

The River Thames in Ewen is only about six foot wide and shallow enough for Pooh to walk across. You can see the weeds and the river bed through the clear water.

Next stop is Ashton Keynes, seven miles from the source of the River Thames.

The infant River Thames flows pass houses in Ashton Keynes, each has its own bridge (of stone, brick or wood) across the water to the lane.
