The town of Dartford is in the Darenth Valley and is close to the River Thames. It is near here where the river Darent flows into the Thames.

As its name suggests, Dartford (Darent Ford) was once a fording place over the Darent where it crossed the road from London to the Kent coast. There are records of a ford operating in Roman times.

The river through Dartford town and parks it is peaceful and gentle.
