This is a very old house

This is a 15th century house from North Cray in Kent. It is now in the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum near Chichester.

In 1968, the original house in North Cray was going to be demolished to make way for road widening. The museum bought the house and dismantled it bit by bit. They labelled every thing so they could rebuild the house again in the museum.

Why is it red?

When the timbers (wood) were examined before being repaired, traces of red paint were found on the outside and inside surfaces. The paint had survived in places where it was protected from the weather, such as the eaves and under the jetty

Further research has found evidence that many medieval timber-framed buildings had their timbers painted red.

The Woolshop in Halifax the timbers have been painted red as they had been originally.

red

We now know that not all houses in the Tudor times had black timbers.

Lets find out about rich peoples houses.
